Petition to Halt the Use of Chemical Dispersants in the Gulf of Mexico
PETITION: Millions of gallons of the dispersant, Corexit, have been released into the Gulf of Mexico in order to disperse the massive oil spill caused by the explosion and sinking of the BP Deepwater Horizon. The rationale behind the use of the dispersant is to keep oil from the sensitive wetlands and coastlines. However, by dispersing the oil throughout the water column, this practice is making it impossible to recover the dispersed oil at the surface while plumes of the dispersed oil remain at depth, entering the food chain at many levels where it will bioaccumulate as it moves up the food chain. Dispersing the oil means more of it will likely travel with prevailing currents to destinations downstream, including Cuba, Mexico, the Florida Keys, and the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Corexit is one of the most toxic dispersants and one of the least effective on Louisiana crude oil. However, it is the mixture of Corexit and oil that represents an even greater threat as the toxic effects are magnified. Corexit, designed to break down lipid layers, facilitates the movement of toxic materials across the membranes of wildlife and human beings. The dispersant-oil mixture is killing marine wildlife, including dolphins, whales and fish, while also causing a range of serious human health effects to those who have been exposed.
We, the undersigned, believe that the continued widespread use of dispersants, especially Corexit, represents an unprecedented, large-scale uncontrolled experiment on the Gulf of Mexico with potentially grave, decades-long consequences to the marine ecosystems and Gulf communities. We therefore call upon the Obama Administration, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to immediately halt the use of chemical dispersants in the Gulf of Mexico.

I am a former resident of the State of Louisiana. My entire family (immedite and extended) make this state their home. The Gulf of Mexico is so much a part of our lives it is heartbreaking to see it treated as tho it's not so important. So much that it can be used as a petrie dish. Help us protect it, to love and nourish it. This out of sight out of Mind technology is not going to change what may become more apparent after the statute of limitations goes by. What happens to us if the fish become ill or the people who are eating it suddenly have more incidences of cancers or other illnesses? Where will BP be then and what kind of medical care will available? Will insurance companies decide not to cover it? Is our government simply selling us out? These dispersants we can inhale, and or eat are unhealthy. Are we going to see more and more sealife and man with growths, tumors or other biological illness? I agree wholeheartedly that we must halt the use of chemical dispersants in the Gulf of Mexico forever!

President Obama, the continued use of Corexit will cost you a second term and destroy the democratic party because all the Gulf States
will reject you for allowing BP to poison the water with Corexit.

The is, and continues to be, a horrible crime against all life on Earth and is shocking beyond words that it has been allowed to go on this far. I read several times that the US gov had told BP to discontinue use of dispersants then could not understand why I continued to hear of their use day after day, months now... It's baffling to me that The President of the US does not have the clout to stop BP. I want to understand this since we all have a stake in this situation. All of humanity should be horrified and outraged. I am.

stop spraying in the atmosphere. Stop all heavy metal sprays, all toxins of all kinds for all reasons. You don't need to spray things to heal things. Stop putting chemicals into the planet, give it a break from added toxins, and you will see true healing. Thank you.

Look into who sold what shares of BP up to 6 mos. prior to the "accident". That is part of the money trail. The other consideration is that the public is having to rely on a gov't that had offers from other countries for clean up expertise and equipment that they chose to deny, making the impact worse. Lastly, look up the MSDS for Corexit, read it, and, as an intelligent, free-thinking human being, tell me it isn't toxic.
Darlene Montgomery, Az.,
The spreading of toxins to cover other toxins is TOTALLY REDICULOUS!! STOP IMMEDIATELY!!

What they have done is horrific to just HIDE the oil...most likely so BP won't have to pay!!!
Meagan Fastuca, NY,
Francine Lowenberg, Oregon,
Tragically, the oil spill itself can no longer be considered the worst man-made environmental disaster to date. The horrific consequences of Corexit will surpass every man-made catastrophe in recorded history-second only to devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To poison the Earth, to induce suffering and death is the depth of depravity, it reeks of unbridled greed and the burning desire to subjugate, dominate and eliminate. Such acts and intentions are intolerable. The Earth does not belong to you alone. There are many more of us who demand you cease your (eugenics) inspired attack. Hopefully we can stop this before its too late to undo or, at the very least, live with the damage.

This lack of forethought is beyond careless and shameful. The use of toxic dispersants is comparable to using a blow torch to "heal" already devastating third degree burns. STOP.
Terran Daily, California,
Ruth Lyons, Wa.,
the oil was bad enough, but to use the dispersants
raised the toxicity of the whole region. it does appear as chemical warfare. shameful obama allowed BP to use corexit which has amplified the problems and for years to come.
James R. White, Florida,
Jan Schneider, Florida,
Mr Lee, OR,
It is far too apparent at this stage that the chemical dispersants (intended only to HIDE the oil from the surface) are contributing to enlarge the problem. The toxic environmental hazard must be addressed principally with non-toxic oil eating microbes that have NO side effects.
Laura Schleifer, ny,
We are sick and tired of the safety of both the public and the earth and its wildlife being jeopardized for your lies and your greed. Do you honestly think we believe that the Gulf is now clear of oil and that the water is safe when people are reporting symptoms including hemorrhaging, nose and ear bleeds, asthma, staff infections, sties, vomiting, coughing up blood, dizziness, lesions and rashes, etc., etc., etc.? When dolphins are hemorrhaging? When the water being tested in a lab explodes? When marine toxicologists are telling area residents they must either evacuate or wear respirators? when there are reports of the local Coast Guard spraying Corexit from high altitudes out of planes on the water and land every night?
HOW DARE YOU.
It is not your right to continue to poison the land and water as you see fit, and no amount of lies in the mainstream media--a media that you have threatened with fines of ,000 if they attempt to tell the truth--will distract us from the knowledge of how catastrophic this is. No matter how many scientists BP pays off to say otherwise, we know how devastating to life on earth these toxins are.
For the sake of the continuation of life on earth, STOP.
bowen roberts, connecticut, litchfield
the dispersants are cosmetic, they serve only to hide the scope of the disaster. the toxins spread farther & faster & recovery, which should be high priority, is impossible. it's waste on waste-a lose/lose outcome. we will see areas in the ocean with species die-offs that cannot be predicted or prevented. the dispersants are cover-up, an attempt to distroy important evidence...BR
Leo Goodman, Oregon,
The use of Corexit has only made a terrible situation worse, I believe you are aware of this and the alternatives that should be put to use
Cindy, Pa,
(Name not displayed by request), MS,
Who decided that corporations own the air and water of Earth? We are insane to let this go on. When I think of how my granddaughter will never get to walk on the beach or play in the waves of the Gulf, it is sickening. And what is particularly infuriating is the idea that we should let the people who made this mess have full authority in these areas forevermore in the name of "the cleanup" when what they wanted in the first place was full authority over them. It is an awesomely deceptive and wicked ploy but sadly it has worked for now. But for every action there is an equal reaction so the time for earth justice will come.
Tina Black, FL,

There is no justification for any more chemical spraying. It's disgusting, and everyone knows that you have no idea what kind of side effects it will have on the planet or our health. These type of actions show that we the people are nothing but cattle to you who "govern" our lives and willingly assist us in our premature deaths.
